YORK - York College finished the regular season with a 21-9 mark on the season and 17-5 in conference play. The Panthers secured the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament and will host Bethany College.
Bethany College comes into the matchup as the seven seed, holding a 11-11 conference record. However, the Swedes hold one advantage as they swept the Panthers in the regular season winning both the home and away match-ups.
The game is slated for a 7 p.m. tip off on Wednesday night in the Freeman Center.
Tabor, the KCAC Regular Season Champion, is the top seed in the tournament. York is No. 2, followed by Saint Mary, Southwestern, Friends, Ottawa, Bethany, and Oklahoma Wesleyan round out the field.
Tabor will host OKWU, Southwestern hosts Friends, and Saint Mary hosts Ottawa in the other quarterfinal games.
The semifinals will be played Saturday at 2 p.m. at the home site of the higher seeded teams. KCAC Championship Monday will be February 27 at Hartman Arena in Park City, Kansas. Tip off for the men's final is 6 p.m.
Ottawa, Kan. - Another balanced scoring effort extended the Panthers win streak to eight as they close out the regular season. Johnny Cooksey (SR/Shreveport, La) had a team high 17 points and five assists.
After a slow start the Panthers found themselves down 19-9 with 13 minutes remaining in the first half. However, the Panthers went on a 9-0 over the course of two minutes to tie the game at 26. The teams battled back and forth to keep it close until the final two minutes of the half when the Panthers went on a 7-0 run to lead 48-41 at the break.
The second half was all York as they built the lead up to 20 midway through the half. The Braves were able to close the game but never able to get back to single digits as the closest they got was 11 with just over a minute to go.
Chris Smith (SO/Dallas, Texas) added in 14 points, while Cameron Coleman (SR/Allen, Texas) had another double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Keith Mack (JR/Chicago, Ill) and Drelan Triplett each added 11 points for the Panthers.
York shot 46% from the field and the bench outscored the Braves 30-6.
York will host Bethany College on Wednesday night in the first round of the KCAC tournament. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
North Newton, Kan. - Cameron Coleman and Keith Mack helped the Panthers earn their 20th win of the season in front of a tough Bethel crowd. Coleman had a game high 27 points as he also grabbed 10 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double. Mack scored 21 points, and added six rebounds. Johnny Cooksey was the other Panther to score in double figures with 10 points.
The Panthers used a 9-1 run late in the first half to give them a 27-19 lead and pretty much led with a comfortable lead the rest of the way. York led 37-25 at the break and built their lead up to 21 with just over five minutes left in the game on a three point basket by Mack. Bethel went on a little bit of a run Chase Banister made five threes in a row to put the game down to single digits. However, Coleman and the Panthers stayed composed and made the necessary baskets down the stretch to secure the 84-74 win.
York dominated the paint scoring 48 points there, to just 26 by the Threshers. York also had great ball movement offensively as they were credited with 21 assists, led by Chris Smith with six.
York secures a 20-win season for the third time in five years as they sit in second place in the KCAC. York faces Ottawa University on Saturday night to finish out the regular season. Securing the two seed in the KCAC tournament the Panthers will play host to the seven seed on Feb. 22.
