YORK - The Panthers had their work cut out for them in their season opener Tuesday afternoon at the Cornerstone Sports Complex. York was up against a tough Randall University that already had one game under their belt, a 9-0 over Nebraska Christian College.
A back and forth first half went the Panthers way as Johann Derick (SO/Antigua) slid a pass from midfield through traffic to the top of the penalty area and found the foot of Nathan Buzi (FR/Kinshasa, Congo). With a quick turn Buzi ripped a shot that was outside the reaching Saints goalkeeper and into the net in the 20th minute. That goal ended up being the game winner as the Panthers would hold tight defensively for the remaining 70 minutes of play.
York out shot the Saints 11-5 and 5-3 on goal. Bryce Kinsey (JR/Wichita, Kan) and Francicso Esteves combined for the shutout with Kinsey saving all three shots he faced on the afternoon.
York's offense possessed the ball a majority of the game but had some lucky breaks as their defense had a few mental lapses. Kinsey came up big in a few situations and the Panthers never broke.
The win on Tuesday was the third straight year the Panthers have won their season opener. York will travel to Mitchell, S.D. on Saturday to face Dakota Wesleyan. The Tigers are currently 0-1 on the season but will have another game under their belts before Saturday's 7:30 pm kickoff.
