Lindsborg, Kan. - Timmion Hughes (SR/Vallejo, Calif) picked up stolen base 41 on the season in the series finale Monday afternoon. That number puts him alone on top of the York College season records list. Hughes wasted no time on Monday as he singled in the first inning to reach base safely. With one out Hughes took off for second and reached in plenty of time to be awarded the record breaker. Billy Johnson (SR/Oakland, Calif) then advanced him to third on the single before an RBI single by Nick Carney (SR/Pleasanton, Calif) scored Hughes from third. Billy Damon (JR/Reno, Nev) followed suit and scored Johnson on a single to shallow left field.
The Panthers scored four more times in the third inning as both Damon and DV Vidal hit two-run home runs to put the Panthers up 6-0. The Swedes got one back in the fourth inning on a bases loaded sacrifice fly.
With a 7-1 lead the Panthers looked to be in total control before the Swedes came knocking in the seventh. Bethany hit back-to-back singles before Blanco-Perez hit an RBI double to score a run and put runners on second and third with just one out. Bryan Faucher (SR/Las Vegas, Nev) came in to pitch and picked up out number two on a sacrifice fly to center. A single to deep center scored another run before Justin Hukill (SR/Fallbrook, Calif) came in to close out the inning with the Panthers clinging to a 7-4 lead.
Going into the bottom of the ninth inning the Panthers were looking to close out the series sweep but the Swedes wouldn't go away. Hukill gave up a walk to the lead-off batter before forcing a 1-4-3 double play to clear the bases with two outs. Another walk and stolen base put a runner in scoring position before an RBI single now had the Swedes with the tying run at the plate.
Johnny Hemenes (JR/Brentwood, Calif) got the nod to replace Hukill and with a 3-2 pitch to Taylor Nielson, a fly out in foul territory saw Hughes get the final out and secure the series sweep for the Panthers.
Jarrell Cunningham (SR/Susanville, Calif) picked up the win going 6 and 1/3 innings allowing three earned. He struck out five in the win. Hemenes was credited with the save in his closing appearance. Billy Johnson led the way offensively going 3-for-5, while Damon led the team with three RBIs.
York improves to 27-22 on the season and will host Hastings College in non-conference action on Wednesday. The Panthers close out the regular season this weekend with a three-game conference series with Friends University.
