YORK - York College earned a split with nonconference rival Concordia University on Monday night coming from behind to win the second game 12-9 after falling in game one 4-2.
York was only able to pick up four hits in the game as Lilianna Herrera (JR/Cerritos, Calif.) led the team with two hits. Molly Reyes (SR/Corona, Calif.) and Emily Chavira (FR/Madera, Calif.) were the only other Panthers to earn a hit. Chavira was responsible for batting in both runs as she scored Reyes both in the third and fifth innings. Ciera Montalvo (FR/Fresno, Calif.) was credited with the loss as she allowed three earned runs on eight hits.
The Panthers used two big innings scoring five runs apiece in the third and the fifth in their 12-9 win. York allowed Concordia to jump out early scoring two in the first inning before the Panthers responded as Emily Chavira hit a two-run homerun over the right field fence to tie the game. The Bulldogs responded with three more in the second inning before York dished out five in the third. Reyes and Herrera each singled to open the inning before a walk to Kiana Villarreal (SO/Keizer, Ore.) loaded the bases with no outs. A strikeout looking to Chavira brought the first out. A hard hit ball by Laura Leos (SO/Wilmington, Calif) lined into the glove of Nicole Affronti as second base for out number two. She tried throwing over to first to get Vallarreal but the errant throw allowed Reyes to score from third. Brittany Juarez (JR/Downey, Calif.) followed up with a ground-rule double before Jyllian Ahart (FR/Fresno, Calif.) hit a three-run homerun over the center field fence to give the Panthers a 7-5 lead.
The Bulldogs stormed back in the top of the fifth retaking the lead 8-7. Mikayla Lawrence (SO/Lake Elsinore, Calif.) took the opportunity to put the Panthers up once again as she crushed a three-run bomb over the fence in center field, scoring Leos and Juarez. A two-out error then scored Reyes and Herrera for some insurance runs for the Panthers.
Concordia threatened in the seventh when a two out single scored a run and loaded the bases. However, a popout to second base ended the game with and the Panthers celebrated just as the lights went out with the 10 p.m. curfew.
Anissia Munoz (JR/Fresno, Calif.) picked up the win in relief pitching three full innings and allowing two earned. Alyssa Ruiz (FR/Fresno, Calif.) started the game but was pulled after allowing five runs through two innings. Alysia Rodriguez (SO/Canyon Lake, Calif.) closed the game allowing one run on three hits.
Ahart and Lawrence were the difference makers as they each went 2-for-3, each getting their three RBIs on the long ball.
York improves to 7-21 on the season and will host Saint Mary on Wednesday afternoon with the first pitch slated for 3 p.m.
