YORK - Michael Johnson (JR/Orlando, Fla) scored a game high 24 points as he led the Panthers to their fifth consecutive win Thursday night over Oklahoma Wesleyan. Johnson made big shots when the team was struggling from the field, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc.
The Eagles were hot from the start as they made nine three's in the first half. After the first two minutes of play the Panthers found themselves fighting to stay in the game as they couldn't connect on shots from anywhere on the court, while the Eagles were making everything that left their hands. York found themselves down by as much as 16 points when the Eagles went on a 15-3 run. York chipped away at the deficit over the next seven minutes and a long three-point shot from Kameron Malbrough (FR/Arlington, Texas) pulled York within three at the break 41-38.
At the start of the second half Wesleyan pulled back out in front by nine before the Panthers went on their own 11-0 run to take their first lead since the 17:13 mark of the first half. Over the next seven minutes of play the game was back-and-forth as York couldn't pull away. Keith Mack (JR/Chicago, Ill) put the Panthers up by six after scoring four straight points to make it 69-63. The Eagles were able to cut it to five points with just under five minutes to play before Johnny Cooksey (SR/Shreveport, La) made a drive to the layup, followed by two big free throws from Cameron Coleman (SR/Allen, Texas), and then the dagger by Michael Johnson from long range to put York up by 13. York held on over the final two minutes to secure the 89-76 win.
Cooksey ended the game with 19 points and seven assists, with Mack collecting a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Drelan Triplett also scored in double figures with 10 points.
York moves to 18-9 overall and 14-5 in KCAC play. The Panthers travel to McPherson College on Saturday for their first of three road games.
