YORK – The York College Panthers picked up their first win of the season as they posted a season high 83 points in their 83-66 win over Bethel College.
The Panthers had four players in double figures, led by Justine Manjarrez (JR/Montebello, CA), who scored a game high 19 points. Kelsey Sharkey (JR/Lakeview, SD) added 13 points and Greer Kleber (SR/Walnut Creek, CA) and Jesse Poneoma (SR/Anthem, AZ) had 11 each.
York led for all but the first three minutes of the game and owned an 11 point lead at the break. Over the first six minutes of the second quarter the Panthers went on a 19-3 run to push their lead up to 22. Bethel was able to trim it down over the final four minutes as intermission saw a 39-28 score.
The fourth quarter saw a Panther lead dwindle as the Threshers turned a 10 point deficit turn into a four point deficit in under three minutes of play. Head Coach Matthew Madole called a timeout to calm his players down. "We have struggled maintaining our leads late in the game and I wanted to make sure the girls knew we couldn't let this one slip away. I told them to keep doing what we've been doing all game and trust the process," stated Madole. His words worked perfectly as Manjarrez sank one of her four three-point baskets on the ensuing possession. Over the course of the final four minutes York made sure they held onto the lead and came away with the win.
Mikala Wilson (SO/Oklahoma City, OK) led the team with 11 rebounds as she gave the Panthers a strong inside presence. York shot 43% from the field and held the Threshers to 33% for the game.
York hosts Ottawa University next Thursday in another KCAC battle. Game time is slated for 6 pm.
