YORK - York College was unable to get in the win column Thursday night as the Swedes from Bethany College won 70-67 in a battle of two winless teams. York shot just 34% from the field as they were unable to overcome poor shooting in the loss. York forced 22 Bethany turnovers and had three blocks on the night but the Swedes used a five point halftime lead to get the win.
Justine Manjarrez (JR/Montebello, CA) scored a team high 16 points for the Panthers as she was the only player to score in double figures for York. Greer Kleber (SR/Walnut Creek, CA) pulled down eight rebounds and four assists.
York found themselves down by 11 in the third quarter before battling back to within two points on a Manjarrez three with just under two minutes to go in the period. Down four going into the final quarter Elizabeth Maher (SR/Edmond, OK) tied the game on a second chance bucket with seven minutes remaining. York took the lead with under four minutes remaining before the Swedes battled back. Manjarrez hit another three with 40 seconds remaining to pull the Panthers within one at 67-68. Kleber got a rebound and raced down the court for a open layup that caromed off of the bottom of the rim and went out of bounds with 14 seconds left. The miss forced the Panthers to fould and two free throws made by Bethany sealed the win for the Swedes.
York falls to 0-4 in conference play and will face Friends University on Saturday night in Wichita, Kansas.
