York College was unable to pull off the win in the night cap of its own triangular Monday night. After falling to Mount Marty in five sets earlier in the day, the Panthers battled KCAC opponent Bethany College to four sets coming up just short of picking up its second conference win.
In set one the Panthers fell behind early 7-3 before Jolene Herzog (JR/Pullman, Wash) rattled off nine straight serves, including two aces to give the Panthers a 13-8 lead. York would never trail again as the Swedes battled but could never get closer than one before the Panthers answered.
Set two was a different story as Bethany controlled the game from the first serve. York had a -.071 hitting percentage as they were only able to tally four kills the entire game. The Swedes hit .222 to easily control the game winning 25-11.
York was able to get a little closer in the third set before eventually falling 25-22. The Panthers found themselves in a hole early again trailing 8-2 before going on a couple runs that allowed them to tie the game at 10. Bethany was able to go on a run of three to make it 16-12 before both teams went back and forth alternating serves over the final 12 points.
With York down to its last chance the Panthers gave everything they had left in the fourth set. A battle back-and-forth over the first eight points each way found a slow run by the Swedes pull away with a 15-9 lead before Head Coach Erin Freeman took a timeout to calm her ladies down. York was able to gain a couple points but the Swedes continued to pull away going up 20-14. York made it a game coming back to within one at 24-23 but a service ace by Bethany ended the match.
On the match the Panthers hit just .024 and committed eight service errors and nine serve receive errors. York committed 31 hitting errors on the match.
Halie Ewing (SR/Liberty, Mo) led the Panthers with 10 kills. Alyssa Didier (SR/Littleton, Colo) had 14 assists followed by Herzog's 13. Didier and Kylie Wroot (SR/North Platte, Neb) each had 16 digs while Herzog had 15 and Delaney Woods (SR/York, Neb) added 13. Wroot also led the team with four blocks.
The Panthers travel to Sterling on Wednesday to continue KCAC play. York falls to 2-14 on the season and 1-4 in conference.
