York College couldn't hold on as they allowed three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to fall in game two of the Grand Rapids Bracket 4-2.
The Panthers' offense looked to do damage in the first two innings of play after getting a lead runner on in the first and two runners on in the second. However, starting Davenport pitcher Corbin Clouse closed each inning stranding all runners.
York earned their first hit in the sixth inning when the Panthers had back-to-back hits from Nick Stoll (SR/Fresno, Calif ) and Billy Johnson (JR/Oakland, Calif). The Panthers were able to score the first run of the game in the inning after relief pitcher Jonathan Cheshire hit Garrett Anctil (SR/Clovis, Calif) to load the bases and then hit Nick Carney (JR/Pleasanton, Calif) to give the Panthers the 1-0 lead.
The Panthers of Davenport tied the game up in the bottom half of the inning after the lead-off batter was hit by Corey Mixon (JR/Lake Isabella, Calif). A two-out double by Travis Bolin scored the equalizer to put the game at 1-1 after six complete innings.
In the top of the seventh inning the Panthers got their first two batters on base with no outs. Nick Stoll advanced both Lamar Smith (JR/Rodeo, Calif) and Timmion Hughes (JR/Vallejo, Calif) 90 feet as he slapped a grounder down the first base line. An intentional walk to Billy Johnson loaded the bases for Jose Bueno (SR/Oak Hills, Calif). Bueno hit a deep fly ball to left field that scored Smith from third. A double steal by Hughes and Johnson put the Panthers in prime position with Michael Johnson (SR/Union City, Calif) at the plate. However, a called third strike ended the inning with York only scoring one run to regain the lead 2-1.
After York went three up and three down in the top of the eighth Davenport hit back to back singles with two outs to tie the ball game at two apiece. Mixon got into a bases loaded jam before head coach Brian Walth pulled him for Jaraad Salas (JR/Ewa Beach, Hawaii). Salas struggled as he hit the first two batters he faced allowing the go ahead runs come across for Davenport.
York's offense was held down for much of the game as they were only able to muster five hits on the afternoon. The team was very patient at the plate drawing seven walks and three hit by pitches. York stranded 12 batters on the afternoon and struck out 10 times.
Corey Mixon pitched a solid game but was credited with the loss as he was responsible for all four Davenport runs.
York moves down to the loser's bracket and will face Saint Xavier Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. York's overall record is now 44-16. You can access live stats/live video here.
The Panthers hadn't lost back-to-back games since March 28 when they had a three-game skid against Sterling College.
Davenport held the number 1 ranked offense in runs scored (9.57) and the number 7 ranked offense in batting average (.350) to just two runs scored and a batting avg. of .167.
York is one win shy of matching the programs most wins in a season of 45.
