The 2016 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District™ Baseball Teams have been released to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
York College's Michael Johnson (SR/Union City, Calif) was selected to the All-District 3 team.
So far on the season Johnson holds a .385 batting average and leads the team with 16 home runs. He has a slugging percentage of .725. He currently ranks 11th in the nation with his home run total along with his 64 RBIs. He was named First Team All-KCAC and won NAIA National Player of the Week once this season.
Mike not only excels on the field but also in the classroom. He is a psychology major that is active in his major and across campus. He was recently a finalist for York College's prestigious Mr. YC award; an award based on an overall commitment to the mission of the school in aspects in the classroom, involvement on campus, and character.
Johnson is the first athlete from York College to ever be named to an All-District team.
Only first teams were chosen for the baseball district teams, so all honorees will advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
The Academic All-District™ teams include the student-athletes that are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the fifth year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America® Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
The CoSIDA Academic All-America program, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, is the highest academic award given in collegiate athletics from NCAA Division I to the junior college ranks. Nominees to the Academic All-America® program must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.3 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) and must have attended their current institution for at least one full academic year and have reached sophomore athletic eligibility status.
