Alysia Rodriguez (FR/Canyon Lake, Calif.) threw a complete game gem and had a great defense behind her as the Panthers pulled off the upset in the first round of the KCAC Tournament in Great Bend, Kansas. A game that started as a pitchers' dual turned into a hitting clinic for the Panthers in the later innings to run past the 25 ranked Falcons in run rule fashion, beating them 10-1 in six innings of play.
Neither team was able to score until the Falcons had back-to-back errors by Cortney Kifer that allowed Brianna Perez (SR/Madera, Calif.) to score for the first run of the ball game in the fourth inning. Friends would answer right back in the bottom half of the frame as Rodriguez allowed her final three hits of the ball game to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed the Falcons to tie the game before Rodriguez got the next batter to ground out to end the inning.
The Panthers poured it on in the fifth as Rodriguez got her second hit of the ball game to lead off for the Panthers. Courtney Lovelace (JR/Lake Elsinore, Calif.) bunted and reached after a diving Falcons' third baseman couldn't make the catch. Molly Reyes (JR/Corona, Calif.) reached on a fielder's choice and Rodriguez advanced to third after a wild throw by the shortstop missed the third baseman. Lilianna Herrera (SO/Cerritos, Calif.) doubled to deep right field to score two runs for the Panthers and York was in a strong position with runners on second and third with no outs. Another double by Mikayla Lawrence (FR/Lake Elsinore, Calif.) followed by Brianna Perez' double, put the Panthers up 7-1 with no outs. York was unable to score any more in the inning but the damage was done and the momentum was flying high.
Rodriguez pitched a stellar fifth, only allowing a runner on base due to hit by pitch. However, Rodriguez got out of the jam a pitch later with a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning.
The Panthers added three more in the sixth on a single by Brittany Rayls (JR/Menifee, Calif.) that scored two and a sacrifice fly by Renee Rayls (SR/Menifee, Calif.) that scored the tenth run of the game. The Falcons went three up and three down in the bottom of the sixth and the Panthers rushed the field in celebration.
Rodriguez allowed just six hits and struck out five in the complete game victory. She also led the team offensively as she was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate. Brittany Rayls led the team with three RBIs.
York faces Bethany College Thursday morning at 11 a.m. in the winners bracket.
