The Panthers made their final nonconference game of the season about as exciting as possible in a back-and-forth battle when they hosted Grace University Tuesday afternoon. York won 11-9 in extra innings to push their record to 35-15 on the season.
York found themselves behind on the scoreboard a few times Tuesday but the Panther players didn't seem to be too worried. Rodolfo Gutierrez (JR/Sonora, Mexico) started on the mound for the Panthers and pitched 6 and 2/3 innings allowing six runs and five strikeouts. Grace started off quick hitting solo homeruns in each of the first two innings taking the 2-0 lead into the fourth inning. The Panthers were finally able to get on the scoreboard when Jose Bueno (JR/Oak Hills, CA) picked up the first hit of the day for York scoring Rudy Perez (SR/Stockton, CA) and Anthony Enriquez (SR/Sacramento,CA), both of whom walked to get on base. The Royals didn't take long as they regained the lead in the fifth and scored three more before the Panthers had an answer.
Down 6-2 in the bottom of the 7th inning the Panthers started their comeback. Jordan Suter (SR/Sterling, CO) singled and Sean Goodall (SR/San Francisco, CA) reached on a hit-by-pitch. A one out walk to Enriquez loaded the bases before Ivan Perez (JR/Clovis, CA) hit an RBI single to left. Garret Anctil walked with one out and the bases loaded to bring the score to 6-4. A sac fly by Jose Bueno and an error allowing Michael Johnson (JR/Union City, CA) to reach safely scored the tying run before a balk scores Douglas Rhodes (FR/Derby, KS) with the go-ahead run.
In the top of the 9th the Panthers were three outs away from victory but York struggled to close out the ball game as they committed three errors, allowing three runs to score as the Royals took a 9-7 lead. In the bottom of the 9th inning Anctil, current MCAC Player of the Week. hit a 2-0 pitch over the left field fence to tie the ball game once again and put the fans on the edge of their seats. The Royals forced a double play to end the inning and force extra innings.
After Robert Covarrubias got out of the 10th the Panthers went to work in the bottom half of the inning. Jordan Pella (SR/Adams, NE) led things off with a single up the middle and Jordan Suter bunted him into scoring position. Sean Goodall popped out to put two outs on the board with a runner on second. On the first pitch to Rudy Perez he left no doubt that the game was over as he smashed the pitch over the left field fence for a 2-run homerun and an 11-9 victory for the Panthers.
York finishes off their regular season this weekend as they host Central Christian in a 4-game series on Friday and Saturday.
