Men's Soccer: Panthers tie Sterling 2-2

YORK - The York College Panthers were able to come back from a one goal deficit to escape with a tie Wednesday afternoon. The Panthers fell behind in the ninth minute when the Warriors converted a free kick around the York fall to the back post.

York was able to tie the game up a minute before the break as York's Johann Derick converted a penalty kick. The score would remain 1-1 at the break.

In the 74th minute Mateus Ramalho (FR/Fortaleza, Brazil) received a pass from Jacob Rodriguez (JR/Aurora, Colo) and bent the shot around the outstretched arms of Joel Chavez for the Panthers first lead. However, just three minutes later the Warriors evened things up on a misplay in the defensive third to tie the game.

Overtime looked to go the Warriors way as just two minutes in the Warriors were awarded a penalty kick after a fould in the box. Francisco Esteves (FR/Tomar, Portugal) was able to save the Panthers from defeat with a diving save to his right. Esteves made another save moments later as he dove backwards to punch a ball out of the goal.

Both teams came up empty in the two overtime periods as the score remained 2-2. York outshot the Warriors 27-13 and Esteves picked up nine saves on the day. Ramalho had eight shots on goal for a game high.

The tie brings the Panthers record to 2-6-1 on the season. York will have another challenge this Saturday as they travel to Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas. Game time is slated for 3:30 pm.
