Women's Soccer: Panthers shut down Warriors in 3-0 win

By Nick Meck

YORK - The York College Panthers hosted Sterling College in a midweek Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference showdown. Scoreless in the first half, the two teams played a tight game until York broke away with three goals in the second half. Breanna Bembenek (FR/New Lenox, Ill) scored the first goal for the Panthers with a shot from the top of the penalty area, assisted by Nadia Rodriguez (SR/Denver Colo).  After 19 more minutes of play, Justine Medina (SO/Fontana, Calif) scored the goal off of a corner kick that seemed to be saved by the Warriors goal keeper. The keeper seemed to have had control of the ball after a quick drop, but the assistant referee said the ball crossed the goal line. The third goal for the Panthers camenine minutes later off the head of Madison Kinney (JR/Council Bluffs, Iowa). Another corner kick, this time from Sierra Valerio (SR/Albuquerque, NM) went to the back post and bounced off of Breanna Bembenek, where Kinney was able to finish. The Panthers carried on with a final score of 3-0 for the conference victory.

Other statistics recorded from today's game included seven total shots from Sterling, and 18 for York.  Sterling recorded five saves as York had four from goalkeeper Cassandra Martinez (SO/Madera, Calif). The Panthers definitely held the advantage with the pressure creating eight corner kick opportunities, to just one by Sterling.

The Panthers are now 5-4-1 overall, and are 2-1 in the conference. They will be on the road to play Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas this Saturday, October 7.
